Bring on the Beer, Brats and Kraut! What is German for, “Happy Fall, Y’all?” In McKinney, Texas, we interpret that phrase with a welcome to Autumn party that gets bigger and better every year. This year’s Historic Downtown McKinney festivities span an entire weekend! Beginning today, Friday, September 26 at 4 p.m. and going until 11 p.m., the fun continues Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., and into Sunday, September 28 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For all things Oktoberfest, click here.
With three days of fun in front of us, there is ample time to enjoy all this year’s Oktoberfest has to offer. From personal experience, I highly recommend that you make a point to experience Brave Combo on Saturday night at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on the Star Local Media Main Stage. Their high energy polka-fantastic party vibe had me leading a conga line down the middle of Louisiana Street a couple of Oktoberfests ago, but I digress. That is another story for another day. This week’s Fave Five is all about the food. You can check out the full menu of German inspired yummies here, and by all means, taste your way around the square. Just be sure to hit these booths along the way.
Patina Green, Local Yocal and Experimental Table – Three days, three tents! Does it get any better than this for a foodie? This year, Chef Robert and friends tend three tents for our tasting pleasure. Menus feature Berkshire Port Schnitzel, Housemade Brats, Sauerkraut, Spatzle Salad with Kassler Pork and hot dogs for the kids. Be sure you grab some of their dark chocolate chip cookies while you’re there too.
Amatos Trattoria – Chef Scott Amato’s Oktoberfest menu features Sauerbraten, potato pancakes, and large soft pretzels. In addition to serving up great food this weekend, Amatos Trattoria will also be hosting a benefit supporting the ongoing search for the still missing Christina Morris. The twenty-three year old was last seen in a parking garage at the Shops at Legacy before 4 a.m. on August 30, 2014. Numerous merchants and businesses have donated to the silent auction to be held between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday. For more information on this event, click here.
Franconia Beer – Of course, THIS needs to be tasted. It wouldn’t be Oktoberfest otherwise. How lucky are we that Bavarian native, Dennis Wehrmann, 4th generation brewer with a Master’s degree from the Doemen’s Brew Master School in Munich, now calls McKinney home? With a history as rich as his Franconia Dunkel with its dark chocolate finish and as refreshing as his light golden Koelsch, McKinney is certainly a less-thirsty place to live since his arrival. While making the downtown rounds this weekend, make a point to try Franconia’s Oktoberfest brew, an amber Mearzen. Described as full body and malty with German Hersbrucker hops, this 5% alc/vol beer is “the perfect celebration drink during the Oktoberfest season.”
McKinney Wine Merchant – For those who choose to get their German-on with a nice glass of something sweet, be sure to find the McKinney Wine Merchant booth. Located at 120 W. Virginia Street at Wood Street (next door to the east of McKinney Convention and Visitors Bureau), wine lovers will want to make a point to browse this shop. This great little store features hundreds of wines from $9 and up. Andy, the wine merchant himself, is a wonderful resource, and an expert at finding the hard-to-find wines to boot.
Helmut’s Strudel – Speaking of sweet, show Helmut’s Strudel some love. The layers of light puff pastry wrap around love in the form of apple, cheese, cherry or almond apricot dessert fillings. Enjoy. I’d like to close today’s blog with a huge thank you to the wonderful folks at Main Street McKinney, the hundreds of volunteers, and city employees who work so diligently to bring us such fun filled events. The words Thank You don’t seem big enough to encompass the amount of time and preparation you put into providing the rest of us with a wonderful and safe good time. Nevertheless, Thank You!
