Second Saturday in Historic Downtown McKinney is the perfect time to take that special someone out and about on the town. No matter your culinary craving or taste in live music, McKinney has something for you and yours to enjoy. Many merchants host artists or special events on this night, greeting guests from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Plus, art galleries, such as Orisons Fine Art and Framing Gallery host special events and openings on second Saturday.
With so many fun things happening at the same time in the same area, you’ll want to enjoy a nice evening stroll. Whether you choose one place to go, or roam from venue to venue, here are our Fave Five ways to pass a cool time with your sweetie on a hot second Saturday night in McKinney, Texas.
Second Saturday Acoustic Jam at McKinney’s Sweet Spot
One of the coolest second Saturday events happens each month at McKinney’s Sweet Spot. Join the BYOG (Bring Your Own Guitar) fun. If you don’t play guitar, bring your ukelele, your electric bass, your saxophone or your accordion. If you don’t play a musical instrument, that’s okay too. Get ready to sing along and clap along, or just sit back with a super sweet treat and enjoy the magic that happens when the musical sort get together to play. Located at 120 W. Louisiana St., the fun happens between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The Tu-Tones at Landon Winery
Billed as Texas’ Favorite Two-Man Band, the Tu-Tones feature Stompin’ Bill Johnston and Mr. 18K Bob Wingate. With names like that, you know you will be entertained as you chill in the shade with a glass of your favorite Landon Winery libation. The hardest part of this evening will be choosing a fave. Still flush from the nineteen awards garnered at the recent Lone Star Wine Competition, this is the perfect weekend to check them out. Landon Winery is located at 101 N. Kentucky St., on the southwest corner of the square.
4 Way Street Band at Rick’s Lounge
Rick’s Chophouse is a favorite downtown McKinney eatery, as is Rick’s Lounge, the comfortable Lone Star-chic bar area snuggled between the restaurant and the Grand Hotel Lobby. Between the well tended bar, the soft leather couches and the stellar entertainment, this is a great place to hang out before or after dinner. This second Saturday, The 4 Way Street Band does the honors in the lounge. A tribute band for the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, they cover it all, including their previous bands and solo projects. The fun starts at 7 p.m. and goes till 11 p.m.
Rick’s Chophouse is located at 107 N. Kentucky St. For reservations, click here, or call 214-726-9251.
Bonus: I must mention that Elvis T. Busboy plays Rick’s Lounge on Friday night (Aug. 8), if for no other reason than to be able to type the name Elvis T. Busboy. This might be the coolest name in show business we’ve ever seen. And he does a great show too.
Broken Code Plays Caddy Pub
To rock it out Texas style, be sure to check out Broken Code at Cadillac Pizza Pub. Known for their high-energy performances these guys bring the party. From classic rock, to blues, and all manner of fun stuff in between, you won’t be disappointed. Showtime is 9 p.m. but get there early to grab a seat, a pizza and something lovely and cold to drink. Cadillac Pizza Pub is located at 112 S. Kentucky St.
Bonus: Friday night fun at Caddy Pub features the Vince Lujan Project. This Denton, Texas based band is back by popular demand bringing with them their fusion of acoustic, pop, rock, funk, blues, jazz, Latin and soul. Show starts at 9 p.m.
Hear Lynne Cadena At Amato’s Trattoria
Amato’s Trattoria features an excellent “Real Italian, Real McKinney” menu. Order what you will, but, do not skip the freshly baked bread. You might want to save a little room for cheesecake too. After dinner, make your way up to their gorgeous upstairs bar and enjoy the beautiful, sultry sounds of Lynne Cadena.
Amato’s Trattoria is located at 216 E. Virginia St. Saturday Restaurant hours are 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Live music begins at 7:30 p.m. and goes to 11:30 p.m. Kitchen closes one hour prior to closing time.
Bonus: Hank’s Texas Grill
It would just be all kinds of wrong to talk live music in McKinney and not mention Hank’s. If country is your thing, this is where you want to be. We just stay giggly about the caliber of talent they bring us week in and week out. For example, the 2013 Academy of Country Music Best New Female Artist nominee, Sunny Sweeney takes the stage Friday night. Granger Smith does the honors Saturday. Both are fan favorites from coast to coast.
Catch Sunny Sweeney Friday, August 8 at 9:45 p.m. Tickets to her show are here.
Granger Smith takes the stage Saturday, August 9 at 9 p.m. Click here to grab those tickets.
