Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does. ~William James

Recently, members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church gathered to celebrate at a Texas-sized barbecue. Hosts for the event were Sy and Julia Shahid, Richard and Edna Brown, Rick and Kaye Moreno, and David and Michele Bernard. The barbecue for forty was one of many items donated to the parish’s annual fundraiser auction on behalf of the church’s youth mission trip. Junior high and senior high students and their adult sponsors will travel to New Orleans, Louisiana in mid July.

Several couples pooled resources to win the event, that in addition to an authentic Lone Star barbecue spread, also included a beer tasting by McKinney’s Tupp’s Brewery, and a night of boot-scooting under the stars courtesy of Steve and Cindy Deming of SRD Entertainment.  Event winners celebrated youth volunteer, Emily Burlbaw, by making the evening festivities a milestone birthday party for her.

Guests enjoyed smoked brisket, ribs, chicken, and sausage prepared by resident pit masters David Bernard, and Robert Davis. The  buffet also included, baked beans, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, and a variety of delicious desserts, and, of course, birthday cake. As a special treat, racks of ribs held in reserve were auctioned off to the highest bidder raising additional funds for the youth’s upcoming mission trip.

While in New Orleans, St. Peter’s Youth will work with children in the lower ninth ward while working with All Souls Church and Community Center.
